Flora & Landscapes
It is not just animals and wildlife that hold character in Nancy’s work. An avid admirer of botany and ecology, there is an expressive charm present in her landscapes. Nancy finds inspiration from everywhere in the land. The twisted bud of an iris has as much nuance and presence as a grand view of the great plains.
“I try NOT to paint pretty florals but rather zero in on the wonderful forms of iris, poppies, and peonies, all of which grow in my garden. I like them in all their different stages of development: when a poppy bud splits and shows its cadmium red promise, when peonies have bloomed and faded and the fascinating seed pods that emerge from the spent blossom.”
“You cannot live in Montana without having breathless moments of awe every day. The skies are endless inspiration for color, clouds, thunder, rain and brilliant azure days. I take many photos and try to paint plein air in oil for that very reason. Last winter I was outside doing some snow paintings after the day warmed up following a new snowfall. The shadows cast by trees and gullies were so very blue, I questioned what I was seeing!” – Nancy Cawdrey
